Our Security solutions helped protect UTI’s Network from DDoS attacks

Case study

UTI

THE CHALLENGE:

UTI Asset Management is a financial institution in India and is the investment manager for the UTI Mutual Fund.

When the company’s web servers were the victim of a targeted and persistent cyber-attack by the loosely associated international online network of activist and hacktivist entities, known as Anonymous, the UTI found that its traditional firewall and IPS systems were ineffective.

On further analysis, it was found that despite having best-of-breed protection all of its web services were being consistently and continually being compromised.

UTI decided that it needed a more sophisticated protection system for detecting and mitigating DDoS activity across its network. The challenge was to partner with a company that could offer state-of-the-art protection in a timely and cost-effective manner.

By switching to a single provider for its network and security provisioning, UTI found that accountability for security services were boosted and amplified.

THE SOLUTION:

UTI partnered with Tata Communications as it was able to offer the most advanced and secure solution for its needs. By developing an overarching DDoS mitigation strategy that incorporating a managed security service that primarily featured a fast, two-hour initial response time, UTI was able to overcome its on-going issues with Anonymous.

Tata Communications implemented a process whereby all UTI web traffic was diverted via two of its own scrubbing farms so that all data passing through into the UTI network was free of hazards.

Additional security was put in place and monitoring around the clock was instigated with automated mitigation, so adding a further layer of protection to UTI’s systems.

UTI found that all its global network services were now fully protected and secure, with the added advantage that even when under cyber-attack, network performance was not compromised.

THE RESULT:

Switching to a Tata Communications security solution meant that only genuine traffic ever passed to UTI web servers, so preventing the service from suffering degradation, system slowdowns or similar threats to the running efficiency of the business.

UTI found that in the event of a cyber-attack its systems were equipped with faster response times, while the automated alert of DDoS activity meant they were far more able to cope. The result of the solution meant a far higher availability of web services leading to improved customer service.

By switching to a single provider for its network and security provisioning, UTI found that accountability for security services were boosted and amplified.

“I gave Tata Communications a call around 5:30 on a Friday and around  7:30 they were there on a call with four people and were ready with a strategy so we could immediately make some changes to segregate and detect attacks.”
