Business impact: Faster rollouts, lower costs, and stronger security

Liberty General Insurance (LGI) achieved significant operational and financial benefits by modernising its branch connectivity approach. Using Security Service Edge (SSE), 33% of its branches were securely connected without the need for traditional, high-cost VPN installations.

The new model delivered 50% cost savings compared to legacy Global VPN (GVPN) deployments, while reducing network delivery timelines from up to eight weeks to just three to four days. These improvements enabled LGI to scale its operations more efficiently and ensure business continuity across even the most remote locations.

The challenge: Extending secure connectivity to rural and hard-to-reach branches

Liberty General Insurance (LGI) operates a geographically distributed workforce, with over 1,200 employees across 120 branches in 23 states. To support day-to-day operations, most branches were connected to the corporate network using Global VPN (GVPN), enabling secure access to core systems and applications.

However, this model posed significant challenges for LGI’s rural and remote branches. Approximately 40 locations could not be serviced cost-effectively using GVPN due to limited infrastructure availability and high deployment costs. As a result, extending secure connectivity to these branches became time-consuming, expensive, and operationally inefficient.

LGI needed a solution that could:

  • Securely connect remote and rural branches

  • Reduce dependency on costly GVPN installations

  • Accelerate network rollout timelines

  • Ensure consistent access to CRM tools and core insurance applications

The solution: A flexible, SSE-based secure access model

Tata Communications implemented its Security Service Edge (SSE) solution to address LGI’s connectivity challenges.

Instead of relying solely on dedicated GVPN links, Tata Communications enabled secure VPN connectivity over local broadband connections, integrated with SSE capabilities. This approach allowed remote branches to connect seamlessly to LGI’s corporate network while maintaining enterprise-grade security standards.

Key aspects of the solution included:

  • Secure access delivered through SSE, reducing reliance on traditional VPN infrastructure

  • Rapid deployment using locally available broadband links

  • Centralised security policies ensuring consistent protection across all branches

  • Seamless integration with LGI’s existing network and application environment

This hybrid model provided LGI with the flexibility to extend secure connectivity to hard-to-reach locations without compromising performance or security.

The result

The SSE-based approach delivered immediate and measurable benefits for Liberty General Insurance:

  • Avoided expensive GVPN installations in rural areas by using cost-effective broadband connectivity

  • Achieved 50% cost savings compared to traditional network expansion methods

  • Reduced network deployment time from up to 8 weeks to just 3–4 days

  • Ensured remote employees had the same secure access to CRM systems and core applications as teams in urban branches

By adopting SSE, LGI improved operational efficiency, enhanced workforce productivity, and ensured business continuity across its distributed branch network.
