The Internet is such an integral part of our professional and personal lives, it’s difficult to imagine life without it.

Nowadays, given the value and importance we attach to the Internet, we wondered – how much time do people really spend online? And what do people really know about the Internet, like where does it come from, and how does it work? We decided to find out.

About the survey

Over the summer months of 2014, Tata Communications conducted an online survey called ‘Where does the Internet come from?’. A set of 14 closed questions were administered, aimed at capturing the behavioural, technical and philosophical responses with regards to the Internet. A total of 9,417 respondents across six countries – FranceGermanyIndiaSingapore, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America – participated in the survey. Out of the total number of respondents surveyed, 49% of them were women and 51% men. 32% of the respondents were from Asia (India and Singapore), 52% from Europe (United Kingdom, France and Germany) and 16% from North America. The findings of this survey were then analysed as an aggregate of the responses and further based on age, gender and location to arrive at the insights.

In their own words

We also interviewed 25 people from around the world, and asked each of them this same, simple question: Where does the Internet come from? Some of their responses are quite clever.

So, what’s the answer?

With a better understanding of the Internet, we believe people are likely to get more from their online experience. After the survey concluded, the numbers were crunched and the results analysed, we created this video to answer our own ‘simple’ question – where does the Internet come from?
